I searched that exact phrase and the only hit was this thread.
I have to say there really are no instructions on how to use anything for beginners.
Last year I donated the $5 to download the software and waited for a link for the download from tornado and never got it. Volkan-k finally gave me a link.

I guess your issue with the trash on the screen on the Serial Port is the same problem im having, you don't have CFE or is corrupted.
If that's the case you have to upload it first. Do you have a backup?

Do you have TIAO USB Multi Protocol Adapter (TUMPA) or Parallel port cable?
Unfortunately, TJTAG does not support TUMPA currently.

Yes i have a backup (from other router), but how do i upload it?

That's the real problem, even zjtag 1.8 rc3 is not able to inicialize CPU correctly as 32MB (116) flash, it seems there's some code missing, only works if you try on 16MB (115) things go better but i was not able to unbrick it cause there are errors during the CFE upload.
I guess we will need to wait for a new zjtag version or you can search the code missing to BCM4706 and try compile the code, i will do it if takes too long on a new release.

I've saw that you're getting TTL=100.
That usually means you're goot do upload a new firmware, and means that you have a valid CFE.
Go to dd-wrt and download the tftp2 application, then upload the Stock firmware to it.

Then I get a windows error message saying that zjtag needs to shut down and it turns the router off, even though the switch on the router is still in the on position.
Zjtag recognizes the chipset, jtag 3.0.2.1 doesn't.

Did you install and start the winio.sys file?
I'm using the guide at openwrt for 10pin jtag header.

I found your story through Google. 'Cause I thought to do the same - recover WNDR4500 via jtag. But it's not possible unless the developer provide software & procedure. You have call your mom, friend or a neighbor to help you. One person must push power button and your hit CTRL+C exactly the same moment the power is on. You have to try several times. That's exactly I did with the help from my wife

). Finally I got CFE line and used tftpd procedure, it was quickly -20-30 sec!

) Otherwise you can shorten 41-42 pins on Samsung chip but it's very dangerous. I also used TIAO ttl to usb board.
